Delta State Government has been tasked to look beyond providing relief materials to flood victims and provide a long term solution to the perennial menace which has rendered many homeless, lost properties worth millions of naira.
The call was made recently by a renowned environmentalist Markson Isaac while reacting to the recent distribution of relief materials to flood victims in some Local government by Delta State government, explained that Delta State Government was only paying lip services to the ravaging flood menace in the State.
He hinted that Delta State Government instead of providing relief materials, admonished the government to institute measures that will mitigate flood in communities likely to be affected by the menace.
While positing that Delta State Government under Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa should explain how Ecological Funds has been used in the past four years, noted that Gov. Okowa has not in anyway make judicious use of the said funds, challenged the governor to give account of how Ecological Funds has been used.
He predicted that Delta has the highest risk of flooding in Niger Delta because of its location surrounded by rivers, tasked Gov. Okowa to step up efforts aimed at finding long term solution to the menace, just as he argued that Delta State is currently been threatened by flood each time it rains.
It would be recalled that in its effort to give flood victims sense of belonging, the Delta State government recently set up IDP Camps in strategic areas of the State and has distributed relief materials to some of the flood victims recently set packing by flood.
